My First Blog

Posted by Bud on Wednesday October 4, 2006 - 7:00am | General

Welcome one and all.

Well, my Blog is finally live, a bit of a delay, however I have been very busy touring all over the top of Australia, with my show “An Audience with … Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell”. I visited a staggering 15 venues across Australia in 3 short weeks.

I am absolutely amazed at how many people have registered for my website. At last count, over 450 in total, some as far away as the UK, Netherlands, Canada and Germany. I would never have thought so many people would have been interested! It just goes to show …

My aim for my website and Blog has always been to provide the public, media and long-serving supporters with a central site about my career, childhood memories, Air Force service, current touring schedules, images and much more.

With my Blog I also hope to share my thoughts and views on a number of topics, which are near and dear to me, including some of the following:

- Directing TV, Film & Theatre
- 50 Years of Television
- Reality TV vs Drama
- Older Actors and challenging roles
- Acting Craft

Whilst my foray into websites and blogging is still relatively new, I’m really looking forward to reading your thoughts and comments about subjects which both you and I are passionate about. So please feel free to share your thoughts or ask questions.

Let the Blogging commence.

I was a great fan of Emergency Ward 10 in the UK. Newly arrived in Australia in the 70s, my job involved asking if you`d present swimming trophies. Imagine my delight when Audrey answered the phone (I was expecting a PR team!) You were both delightful and raised the status of a rather ordinary event. Have unabashedly loved everything you`ve been in but missed `The Carer`. Is there a video/DVD available?

Jane there is a Video/DVD or Audio Tape available of The Carer from Bay Street Productions, try them on email publications@bsp.net.au they should be able to help you - Regards Bud

    Hi Bud!

I recently read Being a Chum as Fun, the story of Cliff Nicholls Whitta (Nicky) and you got a mention! Did you do the breakfast session with Nicky on 2CH in 1946/47? If so what what was it like working with this genius of radio?

    Regards,
    Nick

    G’day Bud

I’m a young fan of yours and have started following your career over the last few years (about seven decades late unfortunately) and unknowingly rented “Dracula: Prince of Darkness” and had great delight in reading your name in the opening credits.
I was wondering how you found working on one of the famous “Hammer Horrors”?

Also, how does Christopher Lee compare with other actors you’ve worked with?

    Regards
    Ryan

    G\’day Bud!

Love your work. Surprised to see you tonight on that what a year show or whatever its called saying you turned 60 in 1983! THough you were like ten years younger, then checked out Wikipedia and you are 83 thats amazing what a long life and a successful one too! Good health to you mate! And all the best. Why did bert take over 20 to 1?

  9. Graeme McVitty commented:

G’day Bud… we spoke on the phone quite some years back now and you are “forgiven” for not recalling but, I asked you about that “final scene” in the last episode of “A Country Pratice” when you were “Santa” and winked. I had asked if that was in the script or did you just do it.
Anyway, about your question of who I see as an all time great Director, well, for me, it is Charles Chavel for “40 Thousand Horsemen”. That is just such an epic and classic.
    Blogyasoon!

  10. Ian Davidson commented:

    Dear Bud,

Thank you for the opportunity to contact you and give feedback or questions. I have followed your career since a child in the 50’s with your many movies and your TV career when we finally got a TV set.

I have enjoyed reading your blog site as I am a WW2 aviation fan, including the planes and the crews. I am an ex national serviceman (9rar),and have made contact with many WW2 pilots, crew and the families. Most have expressed a concern as to how they were treated upon their return, or non-return from widows, by the government. I was surprised to receive comment like this, and all have expressed a desire to receive recognition and some understanding of how they had to cope on their return and the years following.

Most seemed to have struggled trying to cope with young families and no support from the government. I have expressed to them my desire to write a book, or use some other form to help them express many years of frustration…an ex wing commander who joined the RAF in 1937 and flew with bomber command in 5 group has been most helpful, and he has advised me that his comrades were demoted upon return to Australia and forgotten. He received a DFC and flew many early bomber missions over Germany. You would know what he and others experienced, and I am wondering if you are able to comment on your experience upon return to Australia. If not I understand, as you have a huge public profile, and command great respect in the community.

I just feel that after speaking to some of the widows that they
Are still waiting for some sort of recognition for what their husbands went through, and how they had to cope, which is still an open wound for them.

Thank you for the opportunity to make contact, and also for giving us so much enjoyment throughout your career.

Dear Bud, I recently attended an airshow at Temora Aviation Museum, a super effort by David Lowy and associates. I purchased the DVD only to find it was narrated by yourself. A great and familiar voice. You must be proud to be associated with such an organisation. Hope to see you there sometime.

    Over and out. Chris.

  12. Roger Clarke commented:

    Hi Bud…
Fond memories of putting the voice track down for the Temora Aviation Museum DVD program with co producer Keith Webb. And all the talk of flying PRU Spitfires. You may know that Temora now have another Spitfire in their collection, a Mk XVI, bought from NZ and in superb flying condition. I know the boys and girls at Temora always have the welcome mat out for you, especially on flying days each month. I still have recollections of the days when you were working with Bob Dyer on the radio version of Pick A Box. Now that’s going back a fair way!
    Cheers…

  13. Stephen commented:

Recently had sent to me from Canada a copy of the Australian Radio Production of ‘The Dambusters’ which is made up of 26 episides from 1954. I belive you were in it as
W/C GP Gibson RAF. I was wondering do you know where i could get a full cast listing for this radio play? In particular the RAAF Aircrew like DJ Shannon, HBM Martin, FM Spafford etc.
This is a particulary personal request as my Dad’s Dad flew on Lancasters with 460/463-467 RAAF Sqds and his brother served with 617 post dams and was killed in Jan 1945 attacking Bergen in Norway with 617.

Any help you can give in this matter would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Stephen. Sydney. Australia.

This is great, I just finished your autobiography, and I have always been a fan since the days of “charlie the wonderdog”, the movie “the castle” really gets to me I love it!.
However, where can anyone get to see the picture of you on the train platform hugging your Audrey when snapped by a photographer for a womans magazine?, I’d love to see it.

    Dear Bud,
I have tried to make contact with you for 5 years now as I am the secretary of the Catweazle Fan Club. We very much would like you to be a patron of the club, but can’t find an address to send you the details etc. Every year many of us meet at a summer fete at the farm where the series was made. Geoffrey Bayldon, Robin Davies (Carrot) and Richard Carpenter usually come along aswell to join the gathering. In two years time it will be the 40th anniversary of the filming of the series and it would be wonderful if you could come over an join us for the weekend. If this in anyway appeals to you (I know both Geoffrey and Robin would love to see you again) please let us know. If not, well we would still love you to be part of the club.
Your book is very interesting and your one man show sounds marvellous (two members of the club from Australia were telling me all about it) I had no idea about you training of pilots during the second world war! What a star!
I would love to hear from you.
    Stay well and happy
    Carol

    G’day

Huge fan of yours and have been for ages. I reckon you’re one of the finest actors to ever grace the screen and stage. You are such an amazing actor and can play so many roles and play them so great, and bring such life to them like no one else.

Thanks for so many great performances over the years, you’re a pioneer in Australian film and televiion and one of the best and will always be one of my all time favourites. You’ve done so much for this great country thanks again you’re tops!. It’s a bloody shame how John Howard stuffed up the Australian televison industry, I love Aussie shows n films. You are a true living legend and a national treasure and seem like a top bloke.

this is a bit off topic, but r U a fan of The Sheik Of Scrubby Creek Chad Morgan? Because i’m trying to get Australian story\talking heads to do an episode on Chad Morgan and if you’re a fan it’d be great to have the words from one of the true kings of the Australian film and televison industry.

Thanks heaps for your time wishing you all the best and hope you have a great day.

Hello Bud, I have been a fan of yours for a long time. I first met you when you were an Australia Day Ambassador and then again when you visited Echuca. This most probably isnt the right place to ask you a question but i dont know how else to contact you. I have started a childrens theatre company here in Echuca and would love for you to come up and do a workshop with the children if possible. If you could email me back or have a chat with me that would be fantastic!!!

    Dear Mr Tingwell,

I am writing to you as I would like to converse with you about my great uncle - Jim Workman. I’m sure you will remember him having played Cricket for the Australian Services team in England during the Second World War years. I have in my possession a number of items that Uncle Jim kept from his years playing Cricket in England and in India. My grandmother Beryl Clark often spoke of her brother Jim with much fondness, but as he lived in London and died suddenly in 1971, - only 54 years old, I never really got to know much about him. As I was only 9 at the time, I remember being told he had passed away, but not much more than that.
I am hoping you may be able to share some of your thoughts and memories with me.
I have a number of photos, match programs and in particular the program from Jim Workmans Memorial match - in which you played for DR Cristofani’s XI. If Jim had lived, he would have been 84 this year. I’m thinking you may be the only person I can approach now that would remember him.
Your consideration is very much appreciated, and I look forward to your response.
    Kind regards

    Susan Young

    Hi Bud
It was a great privilege and a thrill to act with you in “Mr Bear and Mr Rabbit” in Canberra last year. I was the drunk at the end of the bar interjecting while you told the joke. The film will be in Tropfest this year. I’ve just finished reading your autobiography and have bookmarked all the useful advice about acting and production. I was very impressed with the good sense about life. The “tips” you provide throughout the book are extremely valuable.
I know you probably won’t be coming to Canberra for the Tropfest and you may see the film in Melbourne. If you are coming to Canberra, I’d love to have you sign my copy of your book.

    Mr. Tingwell,

Just a note to thank you for your performance in “The Castle.” My wife watched it alone the other night and she liked it so much she watched it again with me, after encouraging me to see it. What a delightful movie! I enjoyed your looks of disbelief and shock at some of Darryl and his lawyer’s comments. And how refreshing to see a family that always looks on the bright side of life-no matter what. I am a minister and one day I will give a sermon on the themes of persistence and luck. And the value of having such a great attitude.

Just thought you would like to know.

  26. Ken commented:

    Dear Bud,

You bring such a deep warmth to the screen, I have just finished watching “The Castle”, and have been left with the feeling that family is so important to the success of our society!

As the father of a 4 year old boy, 2 year girl and 8 month old girl - I love them all more than I can express.
Your film “The Castle” left me realising how lucky I am to be a father! Thank you for being involved in a film that moved me in so many positive ways!

Bud, as a 40 year old running a business and raising a family, it is inspiring to read how a person like you leads such an active and stimulating life. You make me realise I have no real reason to feel tired, when there are people like you still treading the boards with such enthusiasm and vigour - keep it up!!!

    Hi Mr Tingwell

I can find no mention of your work with Gerry Anderson on your site. As a big fan of UFO in particular I read the previous comment and wondered if this work was also something you regard as best forgotten. I realise that Gerry Anderson’s output is not in same artistic league as your other work but it has given enjoyment to a tremendous lot of people over the years.
    All the best with ‘Antigravity’

  30. john boneham commented:

Gday Bud, As a long time admirer of your work. I think it goes without saying that you are an icon of the Australian Film & television industry, your ability to capture the qualities of the quintessential Aussie are without question. You also portray the spirit of the real Aussie character. Warm, down to earth and a mate who will be there when hes needed. Unfortunately these traits are being lost in this country as people of your generation decline in number. I had the pleasure of forming a friendship with one such fair dinkum Aussie, a chap called Billy Douglass ( yes 2 s’s), he was very particular about the spelling. Billy ( who is unfortunately now deceased) was a patron of mine when I had a pub in country Victoria. We formed a great bond and his stories of the old days were fascinating and gave me a real insight into life in the real Australia, where it was fine to be a larrikin, mateship really meant something and political correctness hadnt even been thought of. This brings me to the heart of the matter. With Bills help and encouragement, I conceived and ran a thing called The Australian Gopher Grand Prix.Basically a steet race along strict Grand Prix lines, except the drivers were older and infirmed people who used Gophers in everyday life.A colorful mix of characters and stories. Wont go into a lot of detail here, but we got a lot of publicity( radio, ABC and commercial, Herald Sun, Nines Today Show and even a photographic spread in Das Spiegel, Germanys top selling weekly magazine. I have developed a concept ( not yet at script stage) telling the sory of the event and characters involved and believe you would be perfect for the lead role as Billy Douglass. I believe the story could be developed along the quirky lines of the real Aussie spirit as captured so brilliantly in The Castle.Being a novice in the film industry, I would also appreciate any input and advice you might be able to offer. I have a dvd of the Today Show report, featuring Billy Douglass and others, which I could make available to you as needed.
Thanks for your time Bud, keep up the good work. which I am sure you will
