  6. jill Hunter commented:

Bud, I shall miss you. I had hoped to see you again when I next came to Oz to see Deb, but it was obviously not meant to be. I shall always remember the times you, Audrey,Bill and I spent together over the years. I am always grateful for all your kindness over the years and particularly when I first came out to Melbourne to be with Bill. Your friendship with Bill had survived so long - your time together in the RAF, your times together in London and then your time together when Bill was publishing in Melbourne. I remember too all the times we saw your plays and partcularly the last time Deb and I came to see you in The Carer in Frankston such a very personal story. Dear Bud,you will be so missed by all your family and friends. You never wasted a minute of your life and you will be sorely missed by all who knew you.
    Much love - Jill Hunter

I never met Bud, but as a fan of B&W movies and all things from the 50`s & 60`s I vividly remember his parts in Emergency Ward 10 and also the ” Murder ” movies where he played the role of Inspector Craddock, always so polite, but also very pensive. While I was visiting family in Australia I caught ” The Castle ” on tv and was so taken, that I bought the CD, not realising that it was in the wrong format for viewing in th UK. A sad loss along with that of Bud.

  8. Mary Bruinink commented:

I was very lucky to meet Bud a few years ago when he was in Ringwood performing the one-man show “The Carer”. I got there early and there was no mistaking that unique and distinct voice. He was very gracious, signing my copy of his book and I gave him a book for his grandchildren. Even though you were very aware of being in the presence of TV royalty, Bud immediately put you at ease with his friendliness. We will miss you so much Bud, you were a fine man. I hope that with Bud’s passing some of his earlier work will be released so that those of us who weren’t born yet will also get to see them. God bless you always Bud and very best wishes to your wonderful family, they obviously loved you very much too.

  9. Jörg Oertel commented:

“Inspector Craddock” we will miss you so much.
    Rest in Peace.

  10. DAVE ASHBY commented:

You will have many crimes to solve up there with that ‘old busy body’ Miss Marples…..those golden days now at a close…..respect, peace and love. x D.A.

A few years ago, following an invitation by Maureen Baker, Bud took a bus to Echuca to play the role of Narrator in the live, riverside re-enactments of our town’s white settlement. At rehearsals the night before, he poured over the script and practised his lines over a humble cheese sandwich.
None of the cast or crew knew if we’d have an audience the next day or how the play would pan out. But hundreds upon hundreds flocked to the Murray for a glimpse of Mr Tingwell. And in his suit and tie, he delivered each line with that special brand of old world grace and aplomb he characterized so beautifully. After the three acts, he sat with the actors and me (the writer/director) at the Star Hotel for tea as we all tried to disguise the fact that we were starstuck by this living legend sharing scones and jam with us. He told us stories about his time in England and on the various movie and tv sets he’d worked on in the past few years. He was amusing, gracious, proud and generous. And despite the low scale nature of the play, he was a consummate professional, bringing a prestige to our production on par with the darling old paddlesteamers that would glide by during the re-enactments. At one stage, he took me aside and encouraged me to take the script to a radio station so it could be read for the senior listeners in the style of old radio show plays. The thought of which still tickles me pink. Without realizing it, Bud’s presence in Echuca/Moama that weekend linked everyone involved in the play to another time - a time of horse-drawn carriages and gentlemen who wore hats and bowed to the ladies. We will all remember his generosity and friendship - something that is stamped all over that unforgettable face of his. His passing is a remarkable loss not only to performing arts, but also to the individual’s whose lives he touched with a very understated and courteous dignity.

  12. Peter Sardi commented:

Charles’Bud’Tingwell- I first met Bud in 1977. I was a student at Graeme Bent’s acting class. He came along with his son and talked & talked & talked about…what else - ACTING. I was fortunate to be directed by Bud in the TV series ‘Skyways’. He was such a great director. Bud ‘cared’…about people. Bud was a mentor to me. Over the years we chatted on several occasions at different functions. After his beloved Audrey passed away we met in Carlton for a coffee and a chat. I will always remember & treasure that day. The actor Jack Thompson said on Bud’s passing:
“A great tree has been felled in our culture.”

In a few simple words Jack Thompson says it best.

Most of us - as we grow older - lose our childlike zest for life. We lose our passion, our enthusiasm and we grow old. Bud never lost his enthusiasm or passion for life. The light in Bud’s eyes never dimmed. Bud never grew old. His light always burned brightly. When you met Bud in the street and you walked away you always felt a foot taller.
Bud may have left us - But his light remains in all the people who were fortunate enough to have known him. Good-night Bud. You were a true GENTLE-MAN.

  13. Klaus Roedder commented:

I am very sad about the passing away of Bud Tingwell. I just wrote a mail to his agency, in hope of getting informations about the filming with Dame Margaret Rutherford, because I am writing a german book of her and the Miss-Marple-Movies…Too bad I could not reach Bud anymore. Rest in peace dear “Inspector Craddock”. Klaus Roedder, Germany

  14. Kerrie Jones commented:

  16. Michelle Albagli (Canada) commented:

From Dr Alan Dawson on Emergency War 10 to the older lover in Innocence, some 45 years later, I will always have good memories of this superb actor. Bud’s family, and all Australians, can be very proud.

  17. Barry commented:

i have watched Charles, time and time again in the 1960s Agatha Christie films. He always came over as a very warm character.Sadly missed.

  18. Allen Fulghum commented:

Bud was a gentle, kind, patient, fellow who had the abiding respect, and love of those in his remarkable career as well a decent, moral human being in all things.

While it deeply saddened this citizen to know of his debt to nature, I take great comfort that he influenced goodness, and left this world a better place because of it.

May God bless richly bless Mr. Tingwell’s family, and give them His peace that passes all understanding.

God Bless
