Old New Guinea recipe: fresh young green coconut juice a glass 3 x daily. (plus exc, no meat and more fruit and greens). Pity I cant get to people early enough. I was lucky enough to had met Bud a few times over the years. In 2000 I photographed him for my book; Australian Legends - People whose story we should know, The book came out in 2005 & I rang up Bud to ask if he would come on Good Morning Australia with me to promote the book, the show didn’t want me on by myself as I’m not famous, Bub did not hesitate & met me at the show the following week, when we were in the green room someone walked past Bud & said “Hi Bud what are you doing on Bert’s show today”? Bud replied; “I don’t know, Richard here asked me to be on the show with him but I can’t remember what we are suppose to be speaking about”. It was a funny moment as we were just about to go on TV & Bud didn’t know what he was there for, all he knew that he was helping me out with something. I think that shows who he was; he was caring to even those that he wasn’t friends with. I asked him for help & he didn’t even know me & he didn’t think twice in giving me a hand. If he didn’t go on the show that day then my book wouldn’t have done so well & I would have never had the opportunity to speak to school children all around Australia about the 80 Australian Legends that I had met & photographed. Thank you Bud.

  45. LL commented:

Funeral Blues by W. H. Auden

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
    Let airplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
    My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever; I was wrong.
    The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
    Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood,
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of this wonderful man. Bud was a hero. His service to the Australia through the Air Force has been an inspiration. His fantastic work as an actor, both on stage and on film, is the dream of all actors today. His encouragement of young and upcomiong actors will be treasured.

I was lucky enough to have met Bud on numerous occasions. He helped me when I was a drama student in high school and at uni. He was a close friend of one of my old family friends. He was a patron of our local arts project. Bud, thank you for your kindness to a young actress. Thank you for your service to our nation. Thank you for your years of entertaining us all.

I will miss you, old teacher.

Bud once told me that actors never really die, as the characters they once embodied live on, in peoples memories, in the stages they filled, in their films. He was right. He will never really die, as people all over the world remember him, the characters he portrayed, the stages he filled. I certainly wont forget.

    Rest in peace.

  112. Debbie Squires commented:

Like all others leaving messages here, I grew up with Bud Tingwell and Crawford Productions but it was the sincere and heartfelt performance in his one man play “The Carer” that has left a permanent impression on me. He was the absolute gentleman that many would do well to emmulate. He has the rare honour of being one of those actors who is beloved by both his fellow actors and by his audience and held the respect of all. Dear Virginia, Christopher and family,

I would just like to send my deepest sympathy to you for your huge loss. I was glad to read that you were there by your father’s side at his passing, it will comfort you to know you were doing all you could for him. I hope he did not suffer, if he did may you take comfort in the knowledge that he is comfortable now.

I know so many of us will write about “our loss”, because your father was such a brilliant, compasionate and gentle man and all Australians felt a special bond with him. But as much as we will miss him, he was one of kind and will NEVER be able to be replaced, he still was not our father and we will never know your loss.

Please accept my very deepest sympathy and may I thank you for sharing your father with us all of your lives.

    Take care and God Bless.

    Most sincere regards,

    Lynette. Dawn. Tilden.

  230. Nicole HOlland commented:

I have never before felt a feeling of loss when losing someone I did not know personally. What a wonderful actor and wonderful man. I am only 36 but I had watched Bud in everything I could. His performance in Innocence and the one man play I saw him in were my all time favourites. There was no-one that exemplified what we all look up to as an Australian legend as much as Bud. He was a gentleman and the most down to earth talented actor Australia has produced. My sympathy to his family. As an atheist I must say, Bud’s time on this planet was worth far more than most. He will not be forgotten.

  231. Kassandra commented:

He truly was an amazing gentleman and Australian identity. He will be greatly missed and his work treasured forever. My thoughts are with family and friends and all of Australia as we grieve.

  237. Peter Boland (former student) commented:

Leonardo Da Vinci’s quote comes to mind at the time of Bud’s sad departure - “a well-spent day brings happy sleep, so life well used brings happy death.” He certainly has had an interesting and rewarding life. Plus a willingness to give back through teaching. I remember well his insightful acting tips given whilst I was a student at VCA. Pertinent but also very funny was his recollection of the mundane thought processes actors need to recognise in moments of high drama. But most of all I remember his open heart and joie de vivre. It was a pleasure to meet him and study acting under his tutorlidge. It was also a joy to see and hear him perform. Thank you Bud. You are in our hearts.

  238. Noeline Smith commented:

  245. Andrew Smith commented:

The reason I’ve always been drawn to Bud is because I saw in him what I loved about my late grandmother; A deepth of pride and dignity that was owned by their generation and whose absence is felt exponentially as the younger generations come through. They were the bastions of respect and robust character and oh how we need them so.

We’ve just lost one of our finest and this a truly somber day.

I had the privilege of working with Bud for a day on a short film he did in Canberra a couple of years back. Not only was he a great joy to work with but during breaks he would regale us with stories from his past about his life as an actor, as a pilot, in various locations around the world, and some of the people he had worked with. He also spoke so warmly about his wife and how much he missed her.
I have met very few people in my life who inspired me so much… and he was the consummate gentle-man.
Vale Bud! Missed but not forgotten!

A hundred years ago,(20 years) when I was a new junior working in a music store,Bud and his wife walked in to buy some classical music. As a 23 year old I knew nothing about classical music but Bud chatted to me about the music, the style and helped my naive self navigate my way through a sale where most classical enthusiasts would have left me embarressed and have short changed me.He was gentle,he was kind,he was sweet and he was a true gentleman. I will never forget that meeting. I knew he was famous but I was bowled over by the charming and sincere way he dealt with me… a young recruit, naive with absolutely no idea, but he treated me with respect and dignity and I will never forget that small but hugely significant moment in my life.In that short interraction,Bud taught me about humility, respect for your fellow humans, how never to judge and how to give kindness without asking for anything in return. The mark of a true and a great man and wonderful human being. To his family, much sympathy, but to his family, a knowledge that this beautiful man has left such a huge and significant contribution to this world.Thank you Bud xx

Bud, you mentioned that when you were flying PR Spitfires, you were often shot at. Of course you were; they knew the significance of those pale blue Spitfires. But you forgot to mention that you had nothing to shoot back with, because PR Spitfires were unarmed. Somehow that seems just like you. One day, may I drink your health in Valhalla?

My deepest sympathy to Virginia & Christopher on the passing of Bud. I worked with him on Homicide and remember his first day on set. I was impressed by his calmness and the self discipline he exhibited when between takes he would return to his start position and quietly wait to start again without a word. Such patience.
Over the years at Crawford Productions we became friends and he encouraged me in my career as a sound engineer together we enjoyed many technical and creative discussions about film. Bud was always interested to know of the latest technical advancements available.
I then worked with him on Summerfield, Breaker Morant,Puberty Blues, Evil Angels, Wog Boy and finally Ned Kelly. He never changed always composed, self effacing and enjoying every minute of his work. Each time we met we just resumed a conversation going on over thirty years.

    Dearest Bud,

The news came as a shock yesterday, and I’m still coming to terms with it. Only last week my wife said to me “I hope we get the funding for Antigravity soon, because Bud’s not getting any younger”. Knowing that you’d been in and out of hospital, I realised what she was saying had a truth to it, but never prepared for it. I can’t imagine anyone else in the role of Harry Hinkley, as you have and will always be the one I wrote the part for. It was a character that represented wisdom, dedication, honesty and warmth, a reflection of what I saw in you. I appreciate the support you gave me and the encouragement, as well as your genuine opinions. I’ll do my best to live up to your words, when you described Antigravity as “better than Independence Day”, but it just won’t be the same without you.

My sincere thanks, it was a pleasure to have know you Bud.

I believe that Bud Tingwell was one of the greats of television and he leaves a big space in television that only he can fill, he did quite a few interviews with pride and gusto, played a great character on The Castle and who can forget Neighbours alongside Val Jellay, he was a multi talented actor who did many musicals, he always managed a smile and a laugh even when he wasn’t feeling the best and he would joke about getting older, too. He never looked his age to me and was an absolute spunk in his early films, if I was sixty years older, I would’ve married the man, what a clever man, he was still doing what he loved up until he died RIP Bud

I am deeply saddened as I only just found out that Bud had passed by seeing “The Castle” advertised on TV as being a tribute to him tonight. I am not sure what to write to express what I am feeling - but can only say that each and every time I saw him interviewed or in character, Bud bought a smile to my face. He had such a friendly and modest demeanor - I felt that he was a man of great wisdom and is one Australian who I have always held in the highest esteem. I know his family will reflect on the times they spent with him and will greatly appreciate the fact that he was in their lives.

  424. Brad Hilton commented:

I, like most Australians, was immensely saddened to hear of the loss, to our country and to our lives, of such a wonderful man. Though Bud was known better for his acting work, of specific significance to me was his service in the Royal Australian Air Force, and in particular as a Reservist. My fellow members of my Air Force Reserve Squadron and our guests will remember him, not only as the great Australian but as the Flight Lieutenant who served his country when need called, with a solemn toast at our formal Dining-In function tonight.

We WILL remember them, lest we forget.

I feel very saddened by the death of Bud Tingwell. He will be missed by countless people Austrailia and world -wide. My family and I loved his roles in The Desert Rats, The Dish and The Castle, he seemed such a lovely, kind, gentlemanly character.

Am also amazed at his humility. Despite his acts of courage in World War 2, and his amazing flim achievements, he always remained a down-to-earth approachable man. Truly an Australian legend.

My condolences go to the Tingwell family. I’m sure they are infinitely proud of Bud, and that they will kindly cherish memories of him for many years to come.

May his example inspire us all in our daily lives - may we honour and salute Bud’s memory by trying to be as kind, humble, dutiful and cheerful as the great man himself.

I have loved everything Bud has done on the silver screen! One of the best. My favorites would be his role in `The Castle’ and as ‘Gramps’ on The Late Show’s `Charlie the Wonder Dog’ with Charles Bud Tingwell and the Pissweak Kids. Let’s charge our glasses one more time to some `Champagne Comedy’

  452. Sheryl Pretty commented:

    Vale Bud

Like many people, I grew up with Bud on the television, featuring in many roles both dramatic and comedy. Buds presence on the screen demonstrated a fine actor, skilled in his craft, yet also showed the warmth and caring of a gentleman wise beyond his years.

As a new law graduate (celebrated my 50th birthday this week), I have no shame in saying that Buds performance in “The Castle” gave me a greater insight into Constitutional Law, when I first viewed the movie 3 years ago… and probably helped me in the exam!

I hope Bud is “enjoying the serenity” and watching over those dear to him, and those who have had their lives touched by him.

I offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends, and say in closing thankyou Bud for some wonderful memories both emotional and reflective, and some belly aching good laughs.

The wry smile, and the wicked glint in the eye will not fade from memory.

Rest well Bud, and thankyou for sharing your life with so many in your theatrical ventures.

  459. Phil McCarty commented:

Bud was as much a part of my growing up in England as I’m sure he was to many in Australia. Miss Marple, Gerry Anderson… and then all my Australian friends badgered me to go and see ‘The Castle’. And what a war record, a true hero in a time when that word has been devalued. What a very sad loss; condolences to all his family and friends.

  460. Bowie commented:

I was blessed to have Bud launch my children’s book and later do an audio recording with him on the eve of 2008. At first, I was terribly nervous and felt way out of my depth, but Bud had a wonderful gift of making me feel worthy of his time. Within minutes of meeting him, I felt that I’d known him all my life and consequently referred to him as ‘Uncle Bud’. Despite his legendary status, Bud was warm, welcoming, generous and kindhearted. His tales of life as a wartime pilot and early days in radio and television are etched in my memory forever. I will never forget his velvety voice, gentle gaze and cheeky smile. He was a true gentleman, an honourable man.

My heartfelt condolences to Bud’s family. He was a beautiful, beautiful man and will be missed by so many.

In my work with carers and people with dementia I facilitate carer support groups. One of the most memorable and helpful videos I have shown at these groups is the one on Respite narrated by Bud. Many carers have told me how that particular video allowed them to ‘give themselves permission’ and recognise the need to have a break so that they can go on caring. Bud’s warmth and humanity shone in that video and I will continue to show it - thank you Bud for demonstrating and showing us all how it is possible to be a ‘celebrity’ and a loving, generous and kind human being at the same time.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service remembers Bud with great fondness.

RFDS SE Section executive director Clyde Thomson worked with Bud on the original Flying Doctor TV series. At that time, Clyde was a pilot and he flew the aircraft for filming.

“I worked with Bud Tingwell on the original Flying Doctor tv series and he was a true professional who won the respect of everyone on set. He had a gift of ensuring everyone on set thought they were special and that their contribution was essential to the success of the series.”

The Flying Doctor television series was instrumental in raising the profile of the work of the RFDS, not only in Australia, but in many countries around the world. Fan clubs and support groups in other countries are still raising money for the Flying Doctor Service as a result, and only last year a new doctor was recruited from South Africa, who applied as a result of seeing the original series.

All of us at the Royal Flying Doctor Service send our condolences to Bud’s family. We are deeply appreciative to his family for asking for donations to be made to the RFDS in his memory.

While I never met the man I always had great admiration for his acting.
I believe the last I saw of him was an episode of ‘Talking Heads’ some months back, though I may well be mistaken.

    A great tree has fallen.
I went to visit Bud in hospital on the Wednesday evening before he passed with my DOP Brent. We arrived after filming Bed of Roses and it was dark. We were ushered into a side room and there was Bud lying in the dark. We said our hellos and after reintroducing ourselves we had a grand old visit. I realised as the visit went on that he was blind, but his mind was sharp and he gave as good as he got. At the end of our visit, I pulled out my ukulele and sang Somewhere over the Rainbow to Bud. I will never forget the look on his face as he closed his eyes and sang along. I am honoured to have worked on his last TV show and to also have witness first hand a true master at work. He never complained even though we were filming in country Victoria during the bush fires and he was always prepared, I will miss you old man. You have indeed blessed my life and those who have come in contact with you. I look forward to seeing the new series of Bed of Roses because I will always remember you singing at the Foster pub on Karaoke Night. New York! New York! You were a true hero and one that will never be forgotten. I miss you and love you. Your loyal driver, Jay Laga’aia

  522. Jeff Smart commented:

Thank you Bud for being my first ever voice over artiste (ie: guinea pig !!) and kindly offering to voice my “Thunderbirds” spoof production “Nosey Parker is Go!”

I will always remember you and your wife Audrey sitting next to me in the wee small hours watching the premiere on the big screen at the Valhalla cinema in Melbourne. You even taped the audience reaction for me on your little audio recorder, so you could play it back for me to prove how well the film was received.

I remember Santo and the D Gen were in awe of you when they asked you to do the dad in the Charlie the wonderdog skits, and they were worried you might look down on them for having a microphone tied to a broom stick ( well that’s what Santo told me anyway!).
But you never looked down on anyone, and were always encouraging to all us budding film makers!
    Thank You Bud,
    your friend

Thank you for being a friend. You gave so much of yourself, to me, to everyone you met.
I always said you were a fraud when playing ‘nice’ roles. You didn’t have to act. You were one of this worlds gentlemen.
There is no one I will miss as much as you, Old Mate. Thank you for every moment I spent in your company. Sorry for pestering you so much about Margeret Rutherford.

  529. Matthew Iorianni commented:

Now here is a true gentleman that Australian’s had the pleasure of knowing for decades. During this time, we should reflect on and mourn a true Australian, as he will be so very sadly missed.
His work was widely watched and his age at heart ensured anyone belonging to any generation would watch him and identify with him.
Personally, I identified with him most when he played the subtly humerous QC. His somewhat small screen time made the respondent long for more. Perhaps it was the awe and the atmosphere that only he could create.
A gentleman, an actor and an Australian, Mr. Charles ‘Bud” Tingwell was and still is a true insperation and I myself will miss his very stong and impressive presence. He truely was the biggest of the big in Australian public life.

  530. John Singer commented:

I first met Bud in the early 1950’s he was still the same when we met a couple of years ago. He was not only a great actor and director but also a loyal friend and a great role model. Unfortunately they broke the mould. So long cobber.

  531. Holger commented:
